I could stay silent, as always, I could stay silent but I won’t. There are many reasons not to write: I’m not an expert, I might get my facts wrong, “I can’t make a difference”, it’s not focusing on the positive, it’s angry, it sucks, it’s political, won’t make money ... but if I stay silent, they are winning. And god, I wouldn’t want that.
I only learned yesterday that the Amazon is burning, and at first I thought, “just another thing to add to the planetary shit show”, “yet another disaster we can’t do anything about” but that kind of thinking it’s wrong, because it’s stuck and it won’t get anything moving.
I’m well aware that there are many environmental and political disasters I could share about, I like many, pick and choose, I have #selectiveempathy
and for that I am sorry. I try to do better.
BUT the #amazonrainforest
burning is an attack on our world. It effects us all, and it a direct reflection of the state of our consumerism and lack of planetary vision. None of us want to see the Amazon burn, I’m sure many of us want to visit the Amazon, imagine it as this magical place, a sacred space so I believe we can turn this tragedy into fuel that can effect change, change that will impact many of the planetary struggles around the world.
I’m aware of the impact of Forest Fire. During my time hiking #thesacreddoortrail
I walked through wildfire, I saw forest burn. I’ve fled my home in recent years, tried to protect my babies lungs from the smoke. Fire is a natural part of the lifecycle of forests, from destruction we have growth, but this fire is far from natural. As a child I learned about the impacts of #deforestation
to the rainforest, but in recent years it seems to have lost impact. Deforestation is destroying our planet, stealing our oxygen and killing humans and animals. Deforestation is about greed. Consumerism is out of control and contrary to popular belief we are not helpless. We can impact change.
Right now we need to #savetheamazon
How can we do this ? - donate to Rainforest Organizations
- help buy Amazonian Land
- reduce paper and wood consumption - eat less meat - contact elected officials - sign petitions - make our voices heard !
