Here’s one for all you cloud lovers out there (@wsculley). Still my favorite view in Hanalei, this time both because of and in spite of the cloud coverage. .

What's the limit on moose photos I can post? Personally, the limit does not exist.

“Go outside and let your breath be stolen away. Find the forests, seek the seas, meditate on the mountains, mist covered from morning. We are nurtured by nature, born for the wild places; we’ve no business in cities, in buildings taller than trees can grow. Go outside, and begin living again” -Tyler Gregson

So here's a pretty basic question that can sometimes be tough to answer: what the heck is wilderness?

It just means places that are left in their natural habitat, right? That don't have roads or towns or industry in them - places that are left to nature?

Pretty much. Wilderness areas are the most stringent, protected designation of public land that we have. You can find designated wilderness in national parks, in BLM land, in monuments, in national forests. It just has to meet the criteria of the 1964 Wilderness Act penned by our dude Howard Zahniser.

Wilderness areas usually have to be bigger than 5,000 acres in side, be roadless, and the general area has to appear pretty natural - i.e. it doesn't seem like humans are really around. It has to provide for periods of solitude & offer some opportunities for outdoor rec. like camping and hiking. And of course have ecological/geological/scientific/aesthetic/historical importance is a big plus, too.

Wilderness is just a super rad land classification that tells the public land agencies that manage it to keep it wild. To preserve the natural landscape. To keep the character of wilderness that isn't just good for us - but good for the earth, too.

What questions do you have about wilderness? We love answering your questions and geeking out about our public lands, so fire away!
