So many of your day-to-day movements are in one plane of motion: the sagittal plane (movement forward and backward). Think about it: walking, running, sitting, biking, and going up stairs each have you moving forward all the time. Even the squat and the deadlift which should be staples of every program, only make you move in the sagittal plane of movement. Moving in different planes of motion is what keeps you mobile, healthy, and able to execute more advanced movements. The side lunge is a great exercise because it works the sides of the glutes (the gluteus medius), which are important stabilizer muscles for the hip joint, and are often under-appreciated. Moving in a different direction also helps you work your quadriceps muscles from another angle. This is a huge missed opportunity for athletes. No one wants a blown ACL. You want to be able to trust your knees if you need to change direction sideways playing basketball, squash,rugby  or making a cut on the soccer field. And you never know when you'll slip or find yourself having to catch your balance when you're in an awkward position.
