Praise and lament...joy and sorrow...letting go and letting in...gratitude from the most tender, brimming heart.

My brother posted this video from his last walk through our emptied family home before its sale was finalized today.

I’m grateful to him for this honoring. For being so present to his emotions throughout these last several weeks as we helped my mom pack up the place that has held the bounty and the broken in our lives for 22 years. For choosing to mark this transition in a way that was meaningful to him. For leaving such a beautiful vibration behind to bless the new owners of this sweet, beautiful home.

Healthy interdependent relationships can be hard to discern in a culture which glorifies counter-dependency (overly independent, self-reliant, pushing people away + keeping overly busy) and codependency. Both of which can also be modelled by our caregivers or other close people in our lives.

Counterdependency can begin in childhood or be a reaction to a traumatic codependent relationship. Many counterdependent individuals report having a violation to their sense of safety as well as experiencing vunerability that felt intolerable. Many counterdependents suffer from loneliness as a consequence of feeling distant and disconnected from the ones they want to get close too the most. Their self reliance leads them to feel incapable of trusting and deepening a connection with others.

Codependency often occurs as a result of trauma experienced during childhood many codependents  often felt the need to appease their caregiver or be someone else rather than themselves to earn their worthiness. When they didn't engage in self betrayal they weren't nurtured within a safe and warm environment. Codependents often report feeling the need to abandon their own feelings and needs in order to sustain their relationships or support from parents in order to prevent them from falling apart.

Both codependency and counterdependency are survival mechanisms created due to distress experienced during childhood. These survival mechanisms can be unlearned. They no longer serve us. They no longer protect us but inhibit us from having loving connections and relationships. Our healing is our responsibility that being said it's our responsibility to have healthy dependency with those who we feel safe around those who reinforce and support our journey.

This is inspired from the works of John Bradshaw who was one of the first to coin the phrase " #toxicshame “

Im not a big fan of the word "Toxic" any word that creates a nice neat black and white label is too convenient.
‍
But in this case, it might just apply. Shame, like anger...feeds on itself. When we feel shame we may feel we have done something wrong, and it’s representative of who we are as a person so we cover that with more shame.
‍
Bradshaw says there are  5 key characteristics of toxic Shame..
1) It feeds your core identity that you are flawed
2) You hide your inner feelings
3) Youre on constant guard from being exposed
4) Inner tormet of the mind and soul
5) You wont admit shame
‍
My sixth one is that it is then contributes to disconnection from others on a real and deep level, and that in itself may feed into your #attachmentissues. A #dismissiveavoidant becomes even more shut down, an #anxiousattachment peep projects outwardly even more.
‍
So what do we do? We need to Claim our Shame. Firstly, we need to extricate ourself from the FEELING of shame from our OVER-IDENTIFICATION of shame: we are not what we feel. Then we need to express it. There is a power in expressing that shame in that it releases the energy/the charge associated with it.  However, it is not just expression, detachment and safe vulnerability that releases the power of it, but it’s making a powerful decision to disown its hold over you. ❤️ ‍

I jumped on the opportunity to flow one last time in the jungle before I started my journey home yesterday. 
I’ve been trying to record my practice more so that I can work on my alignment and get some creative inspiration. 
This frame really made me smile! I was playing with @vanlifeyoga ’s side plank pistol squats 🥵 and felt like a strong badass, but additionally it captured me in this rad transition. 
@casa_colibri @erinkellyart and @bianca.scalise.yoga gifted us with the book “Transitions” by William Bridges at our graduation. They taught me that some of the most special golden nuggets of strength, creativity and magic are really found in these transitions. 
Today I’ll finish up the transition from my safe little jungle heaven in Uvita back to my frozen Northern home.
