HEALTHY IRELAND – SLEEP 😴
.
.
😴In this year’s wave of the Healthy Ireland survey, SLEEP was included for the first time, to develop a sense of how MUCH sleep the Irish population is getting and the ways in which the sleep of the nation may be disrupted.
.
.
🙋♀️Note – Please check out my first Healthy Ireland survey post for info and context on this annual nationally representative study!
.
.
😴So how MUCH sleep do we get?
.
.
😴On average, 7.1 hours sleep per weeknight/worknight was reported. However, when you break that down – 34% get between 7-8 hours per night, 56% 7 hours or less and 10% more than 8 hours!
.
.
😴Men and women sleep similar volumes, but 15-24 year olds sleep the most – on average 7.8 hours per night, especially students!
.
.
😴How GOOD is our sleep?
.
.
😴Well, 76% rated their sleep over the past month as fairly or very good, while 3% rated it very bad. It seems the more sleep we get the more likely we are to rate it well. Men however are more likely to rate their sleep higher than women. Students and those in paid employment gave the highest ratings for their sleep quality!
.
.
😴Interestingly, although those living in and outside of Dublin slept a similar number of hours per night, those living outside the capital gave their sleep a higher rating!
.
.
😴What about sleep disruption?
.
.
😴A pretty large 32% of adults reported trouble falling asleep at least some of the time, while 35% reported trouble with waking up too early and not being able to get back to sleep. Women were more likely than men to have difficulty with sleep on both counts! Disrupted sleep was more likely for those with poorer self-reported health, those engaged in home duties, smokers and those living in Dublin!
.
.
😴Finally, a really interesting question included was the likelihood of ‘dozing’ during the day – 54% of adults said they would never doze during the day, but 21% said there was a moderate-high chance that they would! I think the 54% might be telling white lies!
