One of my most favorite sessions in Brazil was riding the small lagoon to the left front corner that had one rail in it all to myself 🙌🏻 •

Having all the space to myself and no audience or crowd to distract me or judge is when I perform my best 😊 🙌🏻

Celebrating small wins. It’s a practice I can easily neglect & I can definitely tell when I do .

It’s a reminder that I need affirmation. And that’s beautiful, right & good. I also have a responsibility to nurture myself by learning to witness my own life .

I keep learning to tell myself “you are doing a good job” and actually believe it .

I internalized as a child that the things to be praised were visible and public. So when I got sick, I had a lot of unlearning to do! Almost nothing I did was visible or public, and so the work began of learning to be gentle with myself .

Here are my 10 small wins from the last 24 hours:

1. Making a pot of coffee
2. Sitting up in bed getting a little work done, propping myself up with lots of pillows
3. 10 minute sitting meditation, 10 minutes of legs up the wall for grounding
4. Letting myself rest linger by lying in bed until the sun came up
5. Taking all my medicine and not getting sick
6. Some care-work with a friend navigating the medical industrial complex
7. Finishing the book “The Alchemy of Illness” by Kate Duff
8. Took a shower
9. Resting after 2 back-to-back meetings yesterday
10. Emptying the dishwasher

What are your small wins friends?! .

There is a point at which you decide to stop sitting back and waiting for things to change. I reached mine February, 2014. I was tired of feeling sick & tired all the time. I didn't like the Mom or the Wife I had become. I didn't want to just get through life, I wanted to be present and enjoy life.

When you reach your tipping point, I am here. Whether you're tired of not sleeping at night, tired of being anxious/depressed, tired of trying to make ends meet, tired of not feeling as great as you could feel, or whatever it may be, I'd love to help.
One of the BEST decisions ever!

Let’s talk today about the Thyroid and pregnancy.  Let’s start by saying that the American Thyroid Association recommends that US women who are planning to become pregnant, who are pregnant, or breastfeeding, should take a daily supplement containing 150 mcg of iodine.
Yes, currently in the USA, iodine intakes in pregnancy are low. Why does it matter?
1. Thyroid hormone is made from iodine.
2. The first 18-20 weeks of gestation the baby is COMPLETELY dependent on the mothers own thyroid hormone for neurologic development.
3. Around mid-pregnancy, the baby’s own thyroid gland begins to produce thyroid hormone on its own.  However, the baby remains dependent on the mother for ingestion of adequate amounts of iodine, which is essential to make the thyroid hormones.
What can you do to be sure to provide enough iodine/thyroid hormone to your baby?

1. As mentioned above, if planning a pregnancy or pregnant, start taking 150mcg of iodine.  Usually prenatal supplements should have enough but check to make sure.
2. If you know to have hypothyroidism make sure your TSH level is optimal for pregnancy, usually a TSH around 2.5 or below is ideal.
3. During pre-pregnancy and during pregnancy your TSH needs to be checked in a monthly basis as your thyroid hormone requirement will change. Usually in the first trimester your levothyroxine dose will need to be increased as that dose is providing thyroid hormone for you and the baby.
4. If hypothyroid and contemplating pregnancy, see an endocrinologist to make sure your TSH is optimal. #thyroidproblems #thyroidandpregnancy #hypothyroidism #hashimotosthyroiditis #hashimotosdisease #womeninmedicine #asawoman #womeninwhitecoats #privatepractice #doctors #doctoroffice #somedoc #docsofinsta #endocrinology #endocrinesystem #docsofinstagram #globaldoctors #amwadoctors #nycdoctor

...unless you are DEPLETED. In which case you don’t have the physical, mental, emotional or spiritual strength for a comeback. You just want to take a nap and eat chocolate covered pretzels all day instead. Nothing wrong with that! But you don’t want to live there. Feel me?
.
This is why you must replenish yourself on an ongoing basis, and particularly after a stressful event or setback. I’m talking rest. I’m talking nutrients (did you know your body wastes away certain nutrients when you are stressed?), I’m talking soothing and balancing what’s going on in your gut (did you know that just an hour or two of stress shifts your gut bacteria to a more disease-prone state?) and I’m talking movement.
.
Now would be a great time to find out how you score on my stress assessment scale. Are you just stressed or seriously burnt out as we wrap up 2019? And what should your next steps be towards that amazing comeback??? 👉 Go to ShesGotPower.com/free

It is the world's most frustrating thing to hear.⠀
⠀
"Omg you look so tired, just take a nap and relax, you'll feel better". UM, actually, no. A nap won't feel better, Karen.⠀
⠀
A nap isn't going to fix what we feel. A nap won't do anything to help the fatigue, joint pain, bloat, bran fog, hair loss, swelling, depression....shall I continue, Karen??⠀
⠀
People don't understand. They don't know anything is wrong. It's called an invisible illness for a reason. We look fine on the outside, but on the inside were falling apart.⠀
⠀
But hearing the words "just go nap" makes me want to kick you🤷‍♀️⠀
⠀
It's important to know that people will never understand and we cannot expect them too. Its important to remember that they're just trying to help. ⠀

You can obviously nap and drink all the green juice you want. Nothing against it and it might totally help! But it wont solve the fatigue or help immediately ⠀
I want you to know I know what you're feeling. ⠀
I've been there. ⠀
I've been told to nap.⠀
I've been told that theres nothing I can do to fix it.⠀
I've been told to chill and take a yoga class.⠀
⠀
I understand you. I am you. ⠀
⠀
It's time to stop feeling this way. It's your time to ditch these symptoms so Karen can STFU. 🤦‍♀️⠀

Time to rattle up the autoimmune space.

The more I speak to women with Hashimoto’s, the more I see hear these beliefs. Granted, it is not their fault (nor yours) - there’s just no shortage of misbeliefs and misperceptions about what Hashimoto’s means.

You’ve likely already heard me same countless times that a special diet and set of supplements isn’t even close to being sufficient enough to get the best results possible, but let’s talk about these other popular beliefs that need to come to an end.

1️⃣The obsession about thyroid lab numbers is out of control. They go up, they go down, they go up again, they stay the same, they go up again. Two take-home messages here.

Firstly: Objective data like TPO and Tg antibodies will fluctuate throughout life. What you see on paper is not cut and dried and conclusive. How you FEEL has to be considered with the numbers. But too many people don’t factor in their own intuitive sense of how “normal” they are.

Secondly: There’s flaws with testing. Just because TSH is high doesn’t mean your thyroid is going to disintegrate. Did you know dendritic immune cells in your body make TSH? Yeah, it’s not that simple.

2️⃣The AIP may be helpful temporarily to curtail symptoms, but if you are on it for 5-10+ years or using it as a lifestyle diet, you’re still dealing with health problems. Not everyone needs to be crazy restrictive - the Instagram AIP zealots just made you think that way. In fact, I would say most don’t need AIP.

If you say you feel better (somewhat) on it, it’s because you have taken away foods that are provocative to your immune system. But what if you’re eating foods that still irritate it, but you aren’t aware of it? Or what if you take away foods that aren’t a REAL threat (hence, why you don’t need AIP)

3️⃣Everyone thinks they have a leaky gut. A lot do, but having an autoimmune disease doesn’t guarantee you have one. You could easily be irritating your immune system through other avenues besides the gut.

4️⃣I had a client once with Hashimoto’s whose symptoms before her thyroidectomy were no different than after. When we addressed her disease AS IF she still had a thyroid, her symptoms vanished.

How many lists do you have right now? I have 2 paper, 1 on my phone and a few more in my head 🙄.

If I'm being honest, the holidays are a hard time for me. I have the need to take care of everything and the need for everything to be perfect, which both cause WAAAY too much stress and little enjoyment of the season.

I have been working with my counselor on setting realistic expectations. I set pretty high expectations for myself unnecessarily and I think everyone else has those same expectations of me when they really don't. Like having the perfect meals and snacks when we host family or buying the perfect gift or volunteering for the school party or whatever it is. STRESS overload! You know, if someone has to eat cereal because they don't like my dinner, that's ok. If someone needs to take back my gift because they don't like it, that's ok. If we run out of booze and have to get more, that's OK 😜.

I was reminded this morning at my workout class that stress is way worse for our health than all the other things. So, I am making an effort to take time to do the things I need and want and let go of some of the things I don't need to stress about. Also, being present in what I'm doing and not thinking about all of my lists. Who is with me?

Here are some things on my list to take care of myself:
✔️exercise when I can fit it in and it feels good
✔️walk the dog most days of the week
✔️watch my favorite holiday movie (The Holiday)
✔️spend quality alone time with my husband at least once a week
✔️Hang with a dear friend and catch up
✔️Lunch and learn about stress relief during the holidays!

What things do you need to add to your to-do list that are for you?

Thanks @lmfvise for the #wisdomwednesday!

This is one of those meals you REALLY just want some easy SAD comfort food because you have nothing prepared and it's easier to grab a pizza or a sandwich and then you do this instead 🤣
Ground beef, yellow squash, zucchini, mushrooms, asparagus, spinach, and cauliflower sauteed in some olive oil. Was it quick and easy? Sort of. Was it yummy? yes. Was it comforting? In a way. Was it worth the extra time? DEFINITELY.

2019 has been by far one of the worst years.. health issues ( hello Lyme disease adrenal dysfunction and hashimotos) work has been RIDICULOUS, school board stress, family “stuff” and more busyness than I could imagine. I can’t wait for this year to be over. I’ve been challenged & pusher more than anyone should be in one year.
Yoga allows me to breathe.. as someone who suffers from functional anxiety this has been a game changer for me. When i say yoga allows me to breathe I mean it I breathe deeper, the tension subsides and my ever racing brain slows down. “True yoga is not about the shape of your body, but the shape of your life. Yoga is not to be performed; yoga is to be lived. Yoga doesn’t care about what you have been; yoga cares about the person you are becoming. Yoga is designed for a vast and profound purpose, and for it to be truly called yoga, its essence must be embodied.” — Aadil Palkhivala

Bring on 2020
2019 has been by far one of the worst years.. health issues ( hello Lyme disease adrenal dysfunction and hashimotos) work has been RIDICULOUS, school board stress, family “stuff” and more busyness than I could imagine. I can’t wait for this year to be over. I’ve been challenged & pusher more than anyone should be in one year.

I remember just how bad my indigestion was during both my pregnancies and I literally gulped down Gaviscon by the litre. Years later I found out that I had two parasites, terrible dysbiosis (imbalance in gut bacteria) and candida. Not to mention a serious digestive enzymes insufficiency. 😳😳 Things finally started to make sense. I had suffered with migraines for most of my life, had issues with digestion (although I thought that this was completely normal, I mean who doesn't?!). Problems with going to the toilet regularly (again, something we just don't talk about). I had heartburn after certain foods, bloating, gas and pain.
🤪😛 Fortunately for me, my doctor only recommended that I take Gaviscon and other over the counter tablets like Rennie. I remember walking around with Rennie in my 20s!
🥺

It was only through embarking on Functional testing that I realised that I wasn't producing enough stomach acid. In fact, it was so bad that when I started work on rebalancing my stomach acid four years ago, my gut didn’t respond to the usual protocol that I would use with my own clients today. This meant that it took so much longer for my body to respond, but thankfully in doing so, I am in a much better place. I no longer suffer with SIBO and the last time I checked the parasites and candida was all gone. I am breaking down and absorbing my food and gut function is amazingly healthy.
🙌☺️ If you want to understand a little more about why it is so important for you to have sufficient stomach acid and also learn how you can do a simple test at home, then hop over to my blog to read my latest Wellness Wednesday post. Link in linktr.ee
