Corruption and exploitation... they happen everyday in the Himalayas and in many other mountain ranges around the world. Porters carrying weight twice over the legal limit, inadequate wages, poor gear in dire environments, working without knowing when they will be paid or if they will be tipped, working regardless if they are ill, fighting for a place to sleep at night, having to pay National Park fee entrances at $25 per person, ignored by most tourists, and the list goes on... Did you also know that there are local mafias in the villages on the way to EBC that will threaten lives and safety if porters do not abide by the “rules”? Did you know that porters who work for tea houses are paid $1 per kilogram, regardless if it takes them a day or 5 days to haul the gear up the mountain, often forcing them to carry 100 kilos in hopes of making $100 over 3-6 days? Porters who work for trekking companies are often way underpaid making only the equivalent of $8-10 U.S. a day, if they are lucky.
Tips are EVERYTHING in the international trekking industry.
Did you know that by researching ethical trekking companies and properly employing porters and tipping your team at least 10% of your total trip cost, you are helping them make above a living wage? You have a chance to end this corruption. Almost 100% of mountain guides start their careers as porters and there is no reason for porters to be treated in an inhumane way. They are trying to make a living and potentially build a career. We need to stop exploiting them and start empowering them.
I’ve had a couple of strangers reach out to me about my most recent blog post, telling me that corruption does not happen and I should give them “proof”. 1) they are either working for these corrupt companies themselves 2) they are in total denial 3) they have not done enough digging or research. 4) they are bullies and just want to pick a fight

I’ve been active in the international trekking industry for 12 years, I know what goes on behind the scenes. If you don’t believe me, please dig deeper, ask questions, take a look around... it is not hard to figure out.

Happy International Mountain Day!

Mountains next to my family are the love of my life. I could never be grateful enough for our remarkable Mother Nature for her beauty. For allowing me to traverse climb and scale these craggy surfaces. My heart sings while immersed in the scintillating presence. 🏔 The mountains have cultivated friendships and bonds that I am forever grateful for. 🙌🏽🤟🏽. Here are some photos of the glorious Andes and The Rocky Mountains. Stay stoked my friends!

International Mountain Day. An excuse to post about how thankful I am for every single event that led to me meeting @evanpetewalsh, becoming best adventure buddies, & moving to the PNW where we would discover a plethora of activities like hiking, rock climbing, mountaineering, and backcountry skiing. Here’s to many more. 😍 🏔 .

“This year I am giving myself the gift of allowing myself to fuel my body. For so long I have deprived myself of the foods I need to allow my body to be strong and powerful. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Climbing has taught me that I can do so much more than I ever thought I could. But without allowing myself to eat and enjoy the company of others, I am depleting my energy and happiness. This is the year when I let myself enjoy food and the power it gives me to do the activities I love.” @emmakbrant
