Good question! Many people will have many answers, but traditionally, what is it? What did the ancient Indian sages intend for when they spread the message of Yoga? .
.
Yoga is a from a Sanskrit word meaning union. This is written by Elizabeth Gilbert: ‘(Yoga) originally comes from the root word “yuj” which means to yoke- to attach yourself to a task at hand with ox-like discipline & the task at hand in Yoga is to find Union- betw mind + body, betw the individual + (divine), betw our thoughts + the source of our thoughts & betw teacher + student (etc). In the West, we’ve mainly come to know Yoga through it’s pretzel-like exercises for the body, but this is only Hatha yoga, one limb of the philosophy.

Yoga can also mean trying to find (divinity) through meditation, scholarly study, practice of silence, devotional service or through mantra. While some of these practices tend to look Hindu in their derivation, yoga is not synonymous with Hinduism nor are all Hindus Yogis. True yoga neither competes with nor precludes any other religion.

The Yogic Path is about disentangling the built-in glitches of the human condition, which is the heartbreaking inability to sustain contentment. Different schools of thought have found different explanations for man’s apparently flawed state. Taoists call it imbalance, Buddhism calls it ignorance, Islam blames our misery on rebellion against God + the Judeo-Christian tradition attributes all suffering to original sin... The Yogis, however, say that human discontentment is a simple case of mistaken identity. We’re miserable bec we think that we are mere individuals, alone with our fears, flaws, resentments + morality. We wrongly believe that our limited egos constitute our whole entire nature. We don’t realize that, somewhere within us all, there does exist a supreme Self who is eternally at peace. That supreme Self is our true identity. Yoga is about self mastery + the dedicated effort to haul attention away from endless brooding over the past + non-stop worrying about the future so you can seek, instead, a place of internal presence.’

I had an insightful interaction last week when I ran into a woman outside of my office building who was curious about what services I and the other practitioners offered. When I told her I was an Ayurvedic Practitioner, her response was "so you do dosha tests". I thank this woman for the inspiration for this post. Most people don't know what an Ayurvedic Practitioner does. So I will explain what I as an Ayurvedic Practitioner do. It is much more than dosha tests.⁠⠀

Using the knowledge of ayurveda, I guide mostly women but men too to reinstate balance in their bodies, whether they're struggling with hormonal imbalances, digestive troubles, skin conditions, anxiety, depression, preparing for or recovering from giving birth, and any other dis-ease. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
And what does that mean? I assess what imbalance is occurring in their mind body system, how it started, and what needs to be done to bring balance back. I help them to adjust their diet so that they are feeding their body rather than feeding the dis-ease. I recommend herbal formulas made from real herbs, real nature, to help their body help itself. I teach them self care practices and concepts that support their mind body system in healing. I listen and I give advice based on the spiritual concepts of yoga and ayurveda. ⁠⠀

Overall, I ignite the healer within my clients and serve as their guide, meeting them where they're at without judgement. ⁠⠀

What this looks like is different for each client, because in ayurveda we treat the person, not the disease. ⁠⠀
