DO YIU EVER WONDER WHY YOUR SKUN FEELS IRRITATED OR INFLAMED?
It’s quite common in the winter months, but why does this happen? Well, all the above are signs of an impaired barrier function.
Your Stratum Corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) is your skin barrier. The Stratum Corneum’s job is to protect your skin and body from the outdoor environment. When discussing the strength of this barrier, you would refer to it as your skin barrier function. The skin barrier is designed to be impermeable, meaning it keeps water in and bacteria out.
🧱 Imagine your skin as a brick wall. Skin is made up of “bricks” (protein from skin cells) and “mortar” (lipids and improtant fats). The lipid layer – aka your skins oil – is the glue that holds the wall together. It creates skin that is strong, hydrated and soft. It holds the natural moisturizers in and keeps bacteria and environmental chemicals out.
What causes an impaired barrier?
⛔️harsh products or handling
⛔️perfumes, irritating chemicals
⛔️excessive cleansing and cleansing in hot water.
How does this affect your skin?
❗️Your skin will loose water (Trans Epidermal Water Loss)
❗️Your skin barrier weakens
❗️Your skin will become dried out
❗️The skin becomes more permeable to irritants and allergens.
